Soil regions on hills are the most lithologically and climatically variable environments, and host the greatest soil variability and endemisms. In the context of “recarbonization”, it is important to know where the soil C stocks are located and how much of these are prone to emission to the atmosphere. While it may appear to be a trivial question considering available global estimates and maps, yet there is a strong need to emphasize that erroneous estimates are made in assessing the global soil C stocks. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their oxygen-containing derivatives (OPAHs) in soils from the Angren industrial area, Uzbekistan.

We measured the concentrations and depth distribution (0-10, 10-20 cm) of 31 PAHs and 12 OPAHs in soils at eleven equidistant sampling points along a 20-km transect in the Angren industrial region (coal mine, power plant, rubber factory, gold mine), Uzbekistan to gain an insight into their concentrations, sources, and fate. Concentrations of all compounds were mostly much higher in the 0-10 cm than in the 10-20 cm layer except in disturbed soil close to the coal mine. Proximity to one of the industrial emitters was the main determinant of PAH and OPAH concentrations. Authors report on forms and soil carbonate formation models as detected by 13C isotopes. This study was carried out in a clayey hilly area of central Sicily where soils have developed on evaporitic deposits of “Gessoso-Solfifera” Formation. Four pedons were selected both on calcareous and no calcareous lithotypes. Pedons were described in field and sampled according to sequence of genetic horizons. Soil samples were analyzed to investigate the following properties: particle size distribution reaction electrical conductivity gypsum organic and inorganic carbon. Moreover isotopic analyses were performed on organic and inorganic carbon. Results allow us to describe the complex relationships between biotic and abiotic soil components. Toxicity of Dimethoate to Some Soil Animal Species in Different Soil Types

Toxicity of dimethoate (insecticide) to an earthworm (Aporrectodea caliginosa tuberculata), a collembola (Folsomia candida), and an enchytraeid worm (Enchytraeus crypticus/variatus) was studied in three different soil types (artificial soil, clayey soil, and humus sandy soil). Parameters measured were survival and biomass change of the earthworms and survival and reproduction of the collembolas and enchytraeids. The degradation of dimethoate was analyzed too. Toxic effects were observed at the concentrations of some mg/kg dry soil. The biomass reduction of the earthworms occurred at lower concentrations than reduction in survival. Influence of soil water content on the thermal infrared emissivity of bare soils. Implication for land surface temperature determination.

[1] The influence of soil water content in thermal infrared emissivity is a known fact but has been poorly studied in the past. A laboratory study for quantifying the dependence of emissivity on soil moisture was carried out. Six samples of surface horizons of different soil types were selected for the experiment. The gravimetric method was chosen for determining the soil moisture, whereas the emissivity was measured at different soil water contents using the two-lid variant of the box method. As a result, the study showed that emissivity increases from 1.7% to 16% when water content becomes higher, especially in sandy soils in the 8.2–9.2 μm range.
